What Is Patina? | Metal Glossary | Industrial Metal Supply
Patina is a thin surface layer that forms on a metal over time as it reacts with air, moisture, and other elements in the environment. It often changes the metal’s color and appearance, such as the darkening seen on bronze and brass or the green or blue film that can develop on copper. Patina is different from paint or plating because it forms naturally through oxidation and related chemical reactions.

In many cases, patina is protective and helps slow further corrosion by creating a stable barrier on the surface. In other situations, especially in harsh or contaminated environments, the patina may be uneven or accompanied by pitting or staining. Some people intentionally encourage patina for an aged look in architectural and decorative metalwork, while others remove or seal it to maintain a bright finish.
