What Is a Gusset Plate? | Metal Glossary | Industrial Metal Supply
A gusset plate is a flat piece of metal, usually steel plate, used to strengthen and connect structural members at a joint. It is commonly found where beams, columns, braces, or truss members meet, and it helps transfer loads through the connection while reducing the risk of the joint bending, twisting, or pulling apart.

Gusset plates are often welded, bolted, or both, and they can be triangular, rectangular, or shaped to fit the connection geometry. The plate thickness, bolt pattern, weld size, and edge distances are selected based on the forces at the joint and the materials being joined, so gusset plates in structural applications are typically designed to meet building or engineering requirements.
