Does Zinc Rust?
Zinc does not rust in the way iron and steel rust. Rust is specifically iron oxide, which forms when iron reacts with oxygen and moisture. Zinc can corrode, but it typically forms a tight, protective layer of zinc oxide and zinc carbonate on the surface that slows further corrosion. This is why zinc coatings are used to protect steel in galvanized products.
In some wet or low ventilation conditions, zinc can develop a chalky white coating sometimes called white rust. This is a zinc corrosion product that can form when moisture is trapped on the surface, such as when freshly galvanized parts are stacked while damp. It is often cosmetic on light exposure, but heavy white rust can reduce coating life, so keeping zinc coated materials clean, dry, and well ventilated helps prevent it.
