Build Your Own Diamond Plate Tool Box

Our friend Joe Mooney of Homesteadonmics is back at it again with another one of his metal projects – this time he’s built a tool or battery box for his travel trailer. Everyone loves aluminum tread plate and who better to show you how to build your own toolbox than Joe!

Joe needed a rugged container that would fit in a large open space at the front of his trailer, and he decided to build one that would fit the trapezoidal shape perfectly. The diamond plate project began with tread plate purchased and cut to size at Industrial Metal Supply, which made the sheet more manageable and transportable. He started with a 16’ length of aluminum tread plate that was .100 thick.

build your own diamond plateHe also used IMS’s shearing service to get the main dimension, a long 16-in. wide strip for the walls and sides of the box.

At home, Joe measured the dimensions needed to fit the trailer frame. Then, using a carbide tipped wood blade on a circular saw, he cut a piece of treadplate to use as a baseplate and template to determine the angles and shape for the box.

To create the 16-in. strip for the walls of the box, Joe measured and marked off the location of the corners of his baseplate. He turned the strip of plate over to the inside and scored perpendicular lines about 25% to 30% of the way through the depth, to make it easier to bend the corners. Then he used an angle grinder to clean up and soft the score marks.

With the help of a strip of 2×2-in. lumber, Joe began the process of bending the aluminum strip at the score marks to make the walls of the box. After completing the bending process, he measured and cut the strip to the exact length needed to create the back wall of the box.

Welding Your Tool Box

To weld the box together, Joe used a MiG spool gun on a Forney 190 multi-process welder with 100% argon gas. Housing the aluminum weld wire in a spool on the back of the gun is preferred due to its softness.

This was Joe’s first time welding with a spool gun, so it took a few tries to get the settings right – such as wire speed, voltage, and amount of shielding gas – but he persisted. In some cases, he actually burned through the aluminum in spots, and he had to go back over some of the earlier welds after improving his technique.

Holding the sides together with a clamp, first, he tack welded the sides and base in spots. Even though the sides were made of one continuous piece of treadplate, Joe needed to weld the length of each corner because the scoring and bending process compromised their strength. He also welded the sides to the bottom of the box.

To seal the back seam opening, Joe added a scrap piece of aluminum plate, making it easier to weld the seam shut.

Joe made a lid of the same diamond plate as the toolbox. He cut a piece that was about 2-in. larger around than the base on each side, which he then scored and bent to overlap the box sides (making a triangular cutout odiamond plate toolboxn each corner). Bending the edges was tricky and required a mallet, some clamps, and some rectangular steel pipe.

After welding the corners of the lid together, Joe welded strips of aluminum angle together to make a frame on the inside of the lid and around the inside top of the box to reinforce it and give it more structure. He also installed a peel and stick rubber gasket, stainless steel hinge, some aluminum coated insulation, and a latch to hold the lid in place.

How Are Diamond Plates Made

How Are Aluminum Diamond Plates Manufactured?

Diamond plates go by several names, including tread plate, diamond tread plate, deck plate, and checker plate. All these names refer to the same basic product: metal sheet, or plate, with a three-dimensional diamond-shaped or bar-shaped pattern embossed on one side.

Diamond plates offer a rugged, maintenance-free, slip-free surface that makes stairs, ramps, vehicle running boards, and walking surfaces safer, especially when wet. It provides protection to bumpers, docks, walls, columns, toolboxes, etc. Aluminum diamond plates also makes an attractive backsplash or wall covering or decorative accent in modern industrial-style interiors.

Diamond tread plates comes in different types of aluminum alloys, and steel, but it is called floor or tread plate when made of steel. There are two basic methods for making diamond plate – stamping and rolling.

Stamping Diamonds

A sheet metal stamping machine uses a metal die on a room-temperature metal sheet to create the raised diamond pattern. After the molded die presses down to emboss a small section of the sheet, the automated machine moves the sheet along a bed of rollers, and then the block stamps the next section until the entire sheet has been embossed.

Rolling diamonds

Most metal sheet is created through the process of rolling, in which pairs of heavy rollers gradually compress a block of very hot metal to create the desired thickness and cross-section. Diamond plate can be created near the end of the rolling process while the metal is still hot, or in a separate process after the metal sheet has cooled. Either way, one of the rollers is covered in a raised diamond pattern. By using just a single patterned roller, the resulting diamond plate will remain smooth and flat on the back side, making it easier to install.

  • Tread Brite is the most common type of aluminum tread plate. It has a shiny appearance and can be used for a wide variety of applications, including architectural and decorative, as well as functional.
  • Embossed Firetruck-Quality (FTQ) Tread Plate has the same pattern as Tread Brite, but with a slightly modified textured diamond¬¬ which provides an even better grip. FTQ meets NFPA industry safety regulations.
  • 5-Bar Tread Plate has a unique pattern of individual blocks of five parallel bars positioned perpendicularly with neighboring blocks like the squares on a checkerboard.
  • Mill Finish Tread Plate comes in aluminum or steel with a matte-finish diamond pattern. It is used primarily in structural applications that do not require bending.

Use + Benefits of Diamond Plate (aka Tread Plate or Floor Plate)

The three names, “tread plate,” “diamond plate,” and “floor plate,” can be confusing, but essentially they are all metal sheet or plate products, though they may have originated in different industries and applications. Each term refers to metal sheet or plate with a raised pattern on one side, and typically used as a slip-resistant surface or decorative siding.

The pattern on a tread plate may be alternating diamond or lozenge shapes or small individual blocks of raised bars in a checkerboard arrangement.

Rolled aluminum diamond plate comes in alloys including 3003 and 6061 (conforming to ASTM B632). Steel tread plate (steel tread plate is also called floor pate, aluminum is not) conforming to ASTM A786 comes in carbon, low-alloy, high-strength low-alloy, and alloy steel hot-rolled diamond plate.

Tread plate is available in a variety of thicknesses and load capacities, and it can be welded and cold worked.

Slip resistant – Raised pattern provides traction on steps, ramps, ladders, floors, tailgates, running boards, catwalks, loading docks, etc., even when wet, icy, or covered with snow, chemicals, or mud. Embossed firetruck quality (FTQ) tread plate meets NFPA industry safety regulations for slip resistance.

Corrosion resistant – Tread plate made of corrosion resistant metals, including stainless steel and aluminum alloys, provides years of service even under the toughest conditions, including marine locations.

Hygenic – Tread plate is easy to wash down and is able to resist damage from strong, corrosive cleaning agents. This makes it ideal for areas where frequent sanitizing is required, like food processing plants, kitchens, restaurants, ambulances, livestock transport, and more.

Protective – Tread plate prevents damage to walls, doors, corners, dollies, skids, etc. It also protects bumpers, treads, truck beds, tailgates, and bodies of commercial, off road, and other vehicles.

Attractive – Various raised patterns, materials and finishes are available for use in architecture, furniture making, etc. Firetrucks and shop walls are two places tread plate is commonly seen.
