Perforated Sheet Metal

Within the world of architecture and contemporary design, perforated sheet metal products are increasingly popular. Depending on your design preferences and requirements, perforated steel sheet is available in several gauges and thicknesses to provide the look and feel unique to your desired layout. The metal perforations are available in several styles: round, square, rectangle slot, and hexagonal.

Galvanized Sheet Metal

Galvanized steel sheet is standard metal sheeting coated with a protective, sacrificial zinc layer that protects the metal substrate from adverse moisture and air, extending the life of the metal. IMS offers galvanized sheet metal in various gauges and sizes to meet your unique production needs.

Expanded Sheet Metal

Expanded sheet metal is a hybrid of traditional sheet metal and wire mesh, providing increased air flow, drainage, and strength for various applications requiring corrosion-resistant, high-strength steel. Expanded metal sheet is ideal for heavy-duty part washing, shot peening, shot blasting, degreasing, and part organization applications.

What is the Difference Between Hot Rolled and Cold Rolled Steel?

Technical differences in the processing of both hot rolled, and cold rolled sheet metal and plate dictate the physical features of each style. Both types of metal are initially processed hot rolled. However, cold rolled steel plate and sheet metal receive additional processing after the metal has cooled to room temperature.

Hot Rolled Steel Plate & Sheet Features

  • Dry or oil-free finish
  • Rough and scaly surface
  • Rounded material edges

Cold Rolled Steel Plate & Sheet Features

  • Oily or greasy finish
  • Smooth surface
  • Sharp edges

Hot Rolled Steel Sheet & Plate

Hot rolling utilizes large ingots and large reduction rolling, improving production efficiency and creating conditions for increasing rolling speed and achieving a continuous and automated rolling process.
Hot rolled steel and plate products are available as standard hot rolled or hot rolled P & O. Common hot rolled steel specifications include HR A36, HR A1011, and HR A1018.
Advantages
  • Increased malleability
  • Numerous applications
  • Less expensive than cold rolling
  • High rate of production
  • Provides a rougher surface than cold rolled steel
  • Easy to drill, form, and weld

Cold Rolled Steel Sheet & Plate

Cold rolled steel is heated and cooled just like hot rolled steel but is then further processed using annealing or temper rolling to develop higher tensile strength and yield strength. The additional labor and time for processing adds to the cost but allows for closer dimensional tolerances and provides a wide range of finishing options.
This form of steel has a smoother finish and is used in applications requiring a specific surface condition and dimensional tolerance. Typical specifications for CR steel include ASTM A653, ASTM A879 CQ, ASTM A1008, and CQ SAE 1008.
Advantages
  • Holds tighter tolerances than hot rolled steel
  • Up to 20% stronger than hot rolled steel
  • Enhanced surface finish
  • Aesthetically pleasing

High-Strength Steel Plate

The difference between steel sheet and plate lies in their gauge or thickness. Plate metal thickness includes steel sheet metal that is 5mm or thicker. Steel plate is often used for construction or structural purposes due to their low maintenance versatility.
Advantages
  • Corrosion-resistant
  • Durability
  • Strength-to-weight ratio
