At Industrial Metal Supply, our steel pipe is offered in three distinct varieties: black welded, galvanized, and uncoated. Black welded pipes are produced by rolling plate steel and then welding the seam; galvanized pipes have a thin coating to protect it from the elements; and uncoated pipe lacks that protection. IMS’s primary alloys for pipe are A53 and A500, which have unique strengths and weaknesses. A53 is more of an all-purpose alloy, used for heavy-duty machinery, gas transmission, and other industrial applications. It has the malleability and weldability to be formed with ease. A500 alloy, on the other hand, has a smoother finish and is intended for general construction use. Unlike tubes, steel pipe is measured by the product’s outside diameter. For seamless steel tubing please search for DOM (aka 4130 alloy) or Chromoly in the Specialty Metals section of the website.
